MEDIATED PLACEMENT VS. SELF-ARRANGED PLACEMENT

Our goal for you is to maximize the possibility of having a successful internship.

In order to do that, we have to figure out your objectives, skills, personality and interests. The more we learn about you,  the better we can match you with an organization. It is our job to inform you of what can be expected, what kind of people you will work with and what kind environment you will have. We will give as much information as possible so that you feel less anxious with the host organization. But if you are to arrange your own placement, there is a big risk. What you can find out about a company from a website or by phone is very limited and can be misleading. You cannot know what kind of experience they have had with interns in the past, you cannot guarantee how much they know about working with an intern, you cannot know what their office is like (environment-wise and space-wise), you cannot know what kind of people you will work with, you cannot know if your work will be interesting, etc. With limited information you have of the company, the possibility of having a successful internship is minimized. A mediated placement lessens the risk and you have the security. All of which equals peace of mind!

When a placement is self-arranged and if something goes wrong with the placement, you must go back to the search process for another organization. This consumes time, energy and finances. In contrast, a mediated placement also applies to re-placement. Participants are taken care of from the beginning to the end.  There are a limitless number of companies everywhere and each company has different workers and work environment. When we arrange placements, we look at various factors and we select the best option for our participants. It is not hard to find ‘a’ company, but it is hard to find a ‘good’ company, requiring expertise and strong relationships. We have a vast amount of resources and utilize our large network of referring hosts when searching for a host organization. Without these tools, it is a big challenge to find a suitable host organization.

Because of the close relationships that we maintain with our host organizations, we have more control over the content of the placement. When things do not work out with an intern, our host organizations communicate with us and attempt to fix the problem rather than just firing the intern. But if you arrange it on your own and something goes wrong, the placement can just be terminated.

Ongoing support of our presence gives the assurance to you that there is someone in Canada they can come to when things go sideways. Through our PR manager, PuB NiGHTS and online community, participants can meet friends, book trips, etc.
